Pareto 20, No. 12: Justin Welsh, for building an audience one person can sustain

Pareto 20, No. 12: Justin Welsh, for building an audience one person can sustain

A weekly essay that has not missed a Saturday, two courses, and no tool verdicts at all. He is here for the frameworks, and this profile says exactly what he is not.

Seat 12 on The Pareto 20 is Justin Welsh, and it is a seat with a warning label: he will not tell you which AI tool to use. He is here because he built the thing most solo operators are trying to build, an audience that buys, and has written down how.

Who he is

Welsh describes himself as a former startup executive who left after burnout and built a one-person business with no employees and no investors. His own pages give cumulative revenue at different figures ($10.8M on one course page, $15M on the about page), which read as running totals updated at different times; treat any single number as his, not ours. His weekly essay goes out every Saturday and has for years; Issue #244 landed on September 5, 2026. The newsletter used to be called The Saturday Solopreneur and was tactical; it is now called Essays and is mostly about work, money and the life you are building. That shift is the main thing to know before you subscribe.

What to read him for

The frameworks that made the audience. His two courses, the LinkedIn Operating System and the Content Operating System, are the codified version of how he grew from a few thousand followers to a paying audience: one platform, a repeatable content system, a product ladder. If you sell your own time or knowledge, those two systems are the shortest route to the same shape.

A sceptic's view of AI productivity. Recent essays are his most direct AI coverage, and they are cautions, not endorsements. The machine is a mirror (July 18, 2026): "AI promises to free up your time, but history tells us otherwise." Mediocrity at scale (July 25, 2026): "There's a brand new way to fail, and it's spreading fast." Having fun is the new moat (July 11, 2026) argues that the one thing AI cannot copy is a person visibly enjoying the work. None of this names a tool. All of it is a useful counterweight to the rest of this list.

The discipline itself. Ten issues in the last ninety days, every Saturday, each one built on a single idea. For anyone trying to publish consistently, the archive is the demonstration.

Start here

The about page, then the newsletter index. The about page tells you who he writes for in his own words: "people privately questioning whether the life they're building is the one they actually want to live."

What he sells, and what that means for you

The two courses (roughly $79 on discount and $200 respectively at the time of checking), newsletter sponsorships, which he sells openly even though the "no ads" phrasing in his own story can suggest otherwise, and an earlier consulting practice. The newsletter is free. Nothing here is hidden, but the revenue figures move around and the sponsorships are not marked inside individual issues.

Not for you if

You came for a tool decision. He has moved from tactics to essays, and the acquisition playbook now lives in the courses rather than the free writing. Pair him with Lilach Bullock for the tool layer and keep Welsh for the system underneath it.
