Devin
Cognition's autonomous AI software engineer plans, writes, tests, and ships code changes independently in a cloud environment. Now on SWE 1.6.

Overview
Devin is the first AI software engineer designed for genuine autonomous operation on real engineering tasks, it can research unfamiliar codebases, write multi-file implementations, run and debug failing tests, and interact with development environments (terminal, browser, code editor) without human direction at each step. Built by Cognition AI and released in 2024, Devin accepts a task description and executes it through a complete implementation cycle: understanding the requirements, planning the approach, writing code across relevant files, running the code, observing failures, and iterating until the implementation meets the specified behavior. This is substantively different from autocomplete or chat-based coding assistance, Devin operates asynchronously, completing tasks while the engineer works on other things, rather than responding to inline prompts.
Current capability is strongest on well-scoped tasks: bug fixes with clear reproduction steps, feature additions to existing codebases with good documentation, and routine code migrations. It underperforms on ambiguous requirements, novel algorithms, and systems requiring deep architectural judgment. Access is through Cognition AI's platform with enterprise pricing.
Devin's significance is as a proof-of-concept for the autonomous software engineering category, it demonstrated in 2024 that real multi-step engineering tasks could be completed by an AI agent, establishing the benchmark that subsequent tools are measured against.
