Papers AI, built by the team behind Overleaf, is an offline-first research workspace that puts writing, data analysis, citations, and collaboration into a single project so you stop re-explaining your work every time you switch tools. It launched August 4, 2026. The AI assistant reads your entire project, drafts, datasets, and references together, so you're not re-uploading context every time you ask it something.
A single project can mix LaTeX, Typst, Word documents, Markdown, and Jupyter notebooks, and you can run notebook cells inline with outputs inserting directly into your manuscript as figures or tables. Files stay on your device by default, with cloud sync as an opt-in for collaboration, and you can bring your own AI model via OpenRouter, Ollama, LM Studio, vLLM, or any OpenAI-compatible endpoint instead of being locked into one vendor's model. Real-time multi-author collaboration includes tracked, reversible AI edits and threaded review, so a co-author can see exactly what the AI changed and undo it.
