Tana Outliner

Tana Outliner (the Supertags-based knowledge management product previously reviewed simply as 'Tana') is a structured knowledge management tool built on a node-based graph model where every piece of information, a note, a person, a task, a project, is a 'supertag' object with typed fields that can be queried, filtered, and referenced like a database. This positions Tana Outliner between note-taking apps like Notion and databases like Airtable: your notes have semantic structure (a 'Meeting' supertag has attendees, date, company, and action item fields), enabling queries like 'show all action items from meetings with Company X in Q2' without switching to a separate database. The AI assistant reads your entire knowledge base and can answer complex questions about stored information, draft documents using referenced context, and surface relevant connections across notes.

Daily Notes create a structured log with automatic tagging based on content, building the knowledge graph as you capture information. Commands function as reusable AI workflows within the tool: a 'Summarize meeting' command applies a consistent structure to any meeting note. The vendor has since launched a separate, newer product also called Tana, an agentic meeting platform hosted at tana.inc, distinct from Tana Outliner covered here, which remains available at outliner.tana.inc.

Tana Outliner is best suited to users who find both simple note-taking apps and traditional databases insufficient, they need the structure of a database but want to capture information at the speed of notes.
