Overview

ChatGPT is OpenAI's flagship conversational AI and a widely used AI tool in the world. As of July 2026 it runs on the GPT-5.6 family, three tiers (Sol, Terra, and Luna) tuned for different jobs rather than one model for everything: Sol for maximum reasoning depth, Terra as the balanced everyday driver, and Luna for fast, low-cost tasks, with a late-July price cut making Luna dramatically cheaper to run at volume. ChatGPT Work, a new agentic mode, extends the product beyond chat into long-running task execution, connecting to Slack, Teams, and Google Drive, running scheduled jobs, and browsing the web on your behalf, effectively absorbing the standalone Atlas browser OpenAI sunset the same month. As of August 10, 2026, OpenAI removed all text-chat rate limits for Free and Go users entirely, so only image generation and file uploads remain capped, and a new one-tap Think button gives free users on-demand access to deeper reasoning without upgrading.

A new Business Premium seat ($125/month, or $100/month billed annually) launched the same week, giving Business customers five times the usage of a standard $25/month seat and removing the five-hour daily cap on advanced features. It handles an enormous range of tasks with consistent reliability: content drafts across almost any format, research summaries, coding in all major languages, data analysis directly within the chat window, and real-time web search. The custom instructions feature lets you define your role, tone, and working style once, the model applies those preferences across every conversation. The free tier provides access with usage limits, making it the most accessible frontier AI available at no cost.

ChatGPT Plus at $20/month removes rate limits, adds image generation, advanced data analysis with file uploads, and access to a growing library of custom GPTs and third-party integrations. For teams, ChatGPT Enterprise adds SSO, expanded context windows, and administrative controls. Its defining strength is versatility: no single AI tool handles as wide a range of everyday knowledge work tasks as reliably, which makes it the natural starting point for anyone building an AI-assisted workflow for the first time.

Our Take

The GPT-5.6 tiering and the new Work mode push it further into actually doing tasks, not just drafting them, and the July price cuts make the cheaper Luna tier genuinely usable for high-volume agentic work. But once you know exactly what job you're doing, translation, video, code, a specialist tool almost always beats it at that specific task. Keep it as the first thing you open and the specialist as the second, not as a permanent substitute for either.

Our own take is direct that this is the wrong call once the specific job is known, a specialist nearly always wins. Capability scores meaningfully lower here than for the general-purpose use case, matching the tool's own documented positioning as a starting point, not a permanent substitute.
